Styling Your Hijab To Suit Your Face Shape

Usually, the face shape that hair dressers try to achieve with various cuts and styles is the oval shape as this is considered to be the most flattering. As a general rule, people blessed with a naturally oval shape usually suit most hair styles. You’re probably wondering why on earth I’m going on about hair styles and not hijab styles, well, because these rules can be applied to the hijab. First you need to discover the shape of your face:

Using a flexible tape measure, make the following measurements and write down the results:

1. Across your forehead at the widest place, about half way between your eyebrows and your hairline
2. Across your cheeks from the edge of one cheekbone to the edge of the other
3. Around your jawline, between where it’s widest on each side
4. From our top hairline to the tip of your chin

Then compare those numbers.
The most common face shapes are:

Round: Approximately as wide as it is long
Oval: Greater length than width
Long: Length is 1½ times the width
Square: Equally wide at the forehead, cheeks and jaw

Here are some tips and tricks I put together for hijab styles for round, long and square face shapes. I haven't done one for oval because most styles suit this shape, even al amiras.

First, the square with an equally wide forehead, cheeks and jaw:

Next the round face, with rounded cheeks and chin and equally wide as it is long:

Lastly, tips for the long, thin face where the length is about one and a half times the width:

I hope these help! If you have any face-shape tips, feel free to post them in the comments.

In all honesty I find the whole 'different hijab styles to suit different shapes' this utterly hilarious. Measuring face proportions are a waste of time - there are a lot more important things that you need to take into account like the size of your forhead, shape of brows, prominence of cheek bones. Short answer: just experiment with a few styles and see what looks best. No such thing as 'wrong' and 'right' style for different shapes...

As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahiukhti, This post is quite helpful. I have a long face so would you recommend the Al- amira 2 piece or 1 piece for my shape face.... please help!(smiles)

I know this post is way old...but...exactly! I inherited my grandmums perfectly round cheeks...like the kind a little toddler girl has, they are really, round and only certain styles of hejab work for me, all others make my face look huge and way too plump.

As a teenage-before shaylahs existed for us in the west, I wore triangles and pinned under the chin and took one edge and pinned behind my head, covering my chin, so the whole affect covered up all the edges of my face and gave my face a more slender look.

I now wear shaylahs mostly as Im in KSA as an expat and have learnt how to wrap them sans underscarf and pins like a local pro...and I do a popular style which is wrap snugly and cover the chin and forhead and tuck edge behind the top of the head (Under previous wrapped piece) it also gives a very slender look to the face.

Don't fret about looking bad in hijab ...think about why you're wearing it and how good you look in the eyes of Allah SWT.

This is a spoof, right? Do you know what's really stylish? Equality between the sexes.

StylishMuslimah said...

Anonymous, you're so right. Unfortunately I don't think our definitions of "equality" are the same.. My definition is where both men and women have the right to not be objectified and to not be judged purely by their physical beauty, but rather by their character, personality and achievements. What's yours?

Hayyah said...

Assalamu'alaikum! Thank you! My hijabi self has been, apparently sinfully according to the salafi haraam police who like to judge the whole world except themselves, thinking about this for a while. My face is inbetween a narrow diamond and pear shape. Any ideas for this?

Please ignore the self-righteous perfect ones who love to flaunt their pious devotion for the whole world to see. A colorful hijab is much more spiritually attractive than hubris.

I have a square face ,and I wear a square hijab & rectangular,i don't care if it looks very perfect,as long as it cover my head and my neck properly & it has to be clean and not very colorful, and especially we don't have to wear those big giant things under the scarf to make the hijab looks nice , because it's haram as our prophet
Mohamed peace be upon him said ,Allah make us beautiful.

StylishMuslimah said...

Anon: Good :) Please be careful what you call "haram" though.
