Idle Words

"It is better to sit alone than in bad company; and it is better still to sit with the good than alone. It is better to speak to a seeker of knowledge than to remain silent; but silence is better than idle words."

Prophet Muhammed (S) - [Bukhari]

What do you think is meant by "idle words"?

Like, smalltalk?

I don't think small talk per se, I think it's more like useless talk for example talking about other people or excessively talking about superficial things etc.

You're correct re: definition of "idle talk". The reminder that I was referring to in my first comment is that all too often, when one is in a group, nonsensical talking, whether out of boredom + innocent superficial chatter or unfortunately deliberate negative intent, can result in harmful words being produced by one's tongue. There is a hadith where one of the prophets, before our Nabi's (SAW) time, was asked which is the worst + best parts of the body - it was stated it is both the heart + tongue, since both have the capacity to do good + bad. Hence, the importance of avoiding situations where one's tongue may produce harm. Rather sit alone + cause no mischief or sit with good, wise people who have knowledge which promotes good Islamic behavior + manners. If I can remember/find the source + more details of the hadith, I can provide it if you want.
Again, jazhakhallah khair for this post + reminder. Allah SWT provides guidance + reminders in all ways, even via your blog :)

The hadith relates to Luqmaan A.S. He was approached by an Angel in a dream + asked whether he wanted to be granted prophethood or wisdom - he chose wisdom [so correction on my previous comment re: a hadith relating to a prophet before our Nabi's (SAW) time - Luqmaan was not a prophet but a very wise man]. Upon Luqman A.S. waking up, he saw all things with more clarity. Luqman A.S. was captured as a slave but had a good + kind master, who became aware of the wisdom that Luqmaan A.S. possessed. The master gave Luqmaan A.S. a sheep + asked for the worst parts + was given the heart + tongue. The master then asked for the best parts + was again given the heart + tongue. The master was told if the heart is not good, the tongue is not good + if the heart is good, it results in good coming from one's tongue. Later the master freed Luqmaan + subsequently Luqmaan was appointed as a judge in the times of Dawood A.S. reign as King.
